Welcome to

The 17th European Bioenergetics Conference

Freiburg, 15. - 20. September 2012

It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 17th European Bioenergetics Conference (EBEC) at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität in Freiburg im Breisgau. EBEC 2012 brings together researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in the area of molecular and cellular bioenergetics. More than 30 years ago the first EBEC was held in Urbino, Italy, in 1980. As many of you may recall, the EBEC took place in Germany once before. After the 1984 Conference in Hannover, we are now honoured to welcome participants from all over the world to Freiburg in 2012. The EBEC is vividly attracting an increasing number of participants, although it faces strong competition from other life science conferences and venues, emphasizing the central role of bioenergetics.

The Conference runs over 5 days from Saturday to Thursday. Each day of the Conference commences with Plenary lectures, while there are three parallel symposia in the afternoon including presentations of selected posters. There will be sufficient time for poster sessions after lunch. The opening of the Conference includes the “Peter Mitchell Medal Lecture”, and the following days cover the topics: ATP synthase; bacterial and mitochondrial electron transport complexes; photosynthesis; electron transport and proton translocation; membrane transport; mitochondrial structure and dynamics; reactive oxygen species and ageing; mitochondria and disease; mitochondrial and cell physiology. In keeping with previous EBEC tradition there is sufficient time for colloquia organized by participants.

We wish you an enjoyable and stimulating EBEC in Freiburg!
